If You like to Grill

or even if you just like to eat, can I recommend you join Weber Nation?

I am watching their chef on a video podcast grilling some marvelous looking steaks. He hasn't even put them on the grate and I'm salivating.

Ya know what?

People really like chocolate.

The kids' school does an annual chocolate sale to raise money. Given the cost of tuition, I find that a little ridiculous, but OK. Sell $500 worth of sugary crap, earn a prize worth about a buck-fifty on the open market. For the last two years, I have resisted bringing any to work - I feel like it's annoying people.

It seems people like being annoyed.

I left a box of 40 bars (at $1/each) upstairs in the kitchen here at the office at about 9AM. When I last checked it at about 2PM, there were five bars left. More importantly, the box (when full) was mostly almond, which I dislike. Of the 5 remaining bars, none were almond, so I guess the huckster company behind all of this (part of Reader's Digest, apparently) knew exactly what they were doing.

On top of all that, my dad took three bars last week back home to my brother's kids. Oldest niece called up that night placing an order for another 36 for her and her friends. So pop is picking up another box at the kids' school right about now. Any leftovers will be brought back here tomorrow.

I have to wonder - would people normally buy all this crap, or do they soothe their consciences about eating candy by saying it's going to a good cause? Either way, I've got a pocket full of singles and my kids are in line for a cheap, lead painted Chinese toy that will break the first day.

I don't imagine

it occurred to anyone threatening this lawsuit to actually keep an eye on what their children were eating:

Kellogg to raise nutrition of kids' food

I'm glad that the company decided to improve the nutritional quality of the food they sell. But this is just example #45,681,298 of the continued lack of a)parenting and b)personal responsibility afflicting the world these days.

My kids get treat cereals. Only on the weekends, and only if they let us sleep in. A few bowls of Froot Loops once or twice a week will not make your kids fat. Especially if you take care of their nutrition the rest of the week. A bowl or two a day will make your kids fat. Solution? Don't let your kids eat too many sugar cereals or snacks.

Again, I'm delighted to see the company work towards making its products healthier. But threatening a lawsuit is the sort of crap that weaselly, mealy mouthed busybodies pull long before they ever bother approaching these companies with a reasoned request.

'Cause it's for the kids, you know.

Weird things

It occurs to me that I may be the only person on the planet who loves mushroom barley soup but really doesn't like mushrooms. I spent more time than is reasonable picking the mushrooms out of my lunch today. I would ask if that's normal, but I think it's quite clear that it isn't.

And the rest?

Busy enough Friday & Saturday. The lack of tension was replaced by an extremely high strung Friday as we got ready for guests. Our DC friends were in town and we spent a lovely Shabbos with them, but getting ready for it seemed difficult and last minute. At 2PM (with Shabbos at 4:17) I was stuffing shells, making mac & cheese, grilling chicken, and many other sundry things.

Relax. The dairy was for Friday night, the chicken for Shabbos lunch.

Leftovers + chicken for lunch, and everybody in the world stopped by. Some friends from the other side of town stopped in to say hello and we made them stay for lunch. Neighbors came by, we went to neighbors, etc.

Saturday night. Ahhhh, Saturday night. We concluded our gustatory weekend with a night out with the Southerners. Babysitter shows up, we head out to our favorite kosher Indian place in Manhattan. Our poor friends in our nation's capital are short on both honest politicians and kosher restaurants, and she in particular misses going out to this place. The food was terrific, the waitress was extremely pleasant to look at (enough that we lived with the slow service), and best of all we were child free.

I spent Sunday loafing around watching sports and nursing youngest who has a bad cold. And now here I am, fatter but happier.

Tomorrow's Menu

is as follows:

  • Turkey
  • Gravy
  • Rolls
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Corn Muffins
  • Mashed Spuds
  • Sweet Pertaters
  • Chestnut Stuffing
  • Sausage Stuffing
  • Apple Pie
  • [Possibly] Chocolate Cake
We're hosting my folks & my brother & his family; mom is bringing the chestnut stuffing, rolls, and apple pie, and I think brother is bringing drinks. The rest is on our heads, though the muffins, mashed, and cranberry sauce are all done. Thanks to a wonderful company out in California I will be able to make sausage stuffing today - I just have to negotiate with Mrs. whether to add the spicy sausage or do something lame. It's my brother's birthday on Sunday, hence the possibility of birthday cake.

The turkey is last year's freebie from work - it's been in the freezer for 11 months, which hopefully is not too long. It's going on the grill someplace around 12 or 1 PM, with the meal hitting around 4 or 4:30. Mrs. will need enough time for the gravy, so I may put it up a little earlier.

I'm getting hungry already.

I am back

and much better fed & watered than yesterday. I would like to say Yom Kippur was filled with the awe & dignity it deserved, and largely it was. As always my concentration was not exactly where I wanted it, but as usual I did my best.

G'mar Chatima Tovah, all.

On a more positive note

I made chocolate oreo ice cream this morning. The little taste I had suggested it was a good idea. And tonight?

Cookie dough, baby, Cookie Dough.
